Job Description
- The Senior Handyman is responsible for maintaining the buildings in which they work by performing various handyman maintenance duties.
- The incumbent provides technical support with regard to reactive maintenance and planned preventative maintenance on plant and equipment, within the service level requirements
Duties and Responsibilities
- Touch-up paint work, minor painting and redecoration as required.
- Painting of walls, ceilings, woodwork, steel work, balustrades etc.
- Weekly inspection and repair to all damaged carpentry including benches, balustrades and dust bins.
- Repairs to doors including cupboard handles, hinges, etc. Replace complete doors.
- Replace defective locks, barrels hinges, catches, door closers etc or on instruction.
- Ensure that all full bores, drains, waste gullies, etc are operational.
- Repairing of blocked drains, basins, down pipes, etc.
- Repairing and fitting of flush masters, taps, cisterns, toilet seats etc.
- Assist sub-contractors with the location of shut off valves when required.
- Optimise water usage by setting the flush masters.
- Identify and repair water leaks.
- Attend to “smell” complaints and identify the source of the problem.
- Inspect expansion joints and cladding once a month for damage and movement and report to the Facilities Manager.
- All missing screws, fixings etc. on bollards, mounting, covers, hording supports and other structural equipment to be replaced, ensuring all work is properly completed.
- Undertake repairs to the fibreglass gutters as required.
- Make good structural cracks etc. Plaster and paint where necessary. Make good spalling.
- Provide access in ceiling etc for the repairs to other services. Reinstate and make good upon completion.
- Planning of work and materials shall be undertaken.
- All material for afterhours work must be drawn from store by 15h30 daily.
- Only emergency breakdown stock will be drawn after hours as per the laid down procedure.
- The Handymen will assist in stock taking of the maintenance stores
- Replacement of floor and wall tiles
- Repairs and replacement to granite and vertical tiling in and around the building.
- Inspect and replace skirting strips including marble and granite
- Ensure that all building signage is well maintained
- Erecting and demolition of temporary, reusable hoarding as and when required.
- Repairs to temporary hoarding
- Inspect, report and damaged windows and glazing.
- Inspect and repair table and chairs.
- Report any work that cannot be attended to timeously to the Facilities Manager.
- Handymen are to respond promptly to all reasonable orders issued to them
- Identify and implement saving initiatives
- Identifying and prioritizing need for preventive and corrective maintenance
Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- 3 years maintenance experience in Electrical and Plumbing an advantage
- Knowledge of Health & Safety Regulations.
- In possession of a legal driver’s license, with no endorsements an advantage
- No criminal record
- Knowledge in electrical/or/Mechanical maintenance
- Physically strong – capable of working with machinery or moving heavy equipment.
- Good knowledge of electrical fixtures, fittings, repairs and maintenance thereof.
- Knowledge of tools and materials used in the assigned area of responsibility.
- Fair written and verbal English
- The ability to work under pressure and against tight deadlines with demanding clients
- A service excellence attitude is a pre- requisite
- Ability to resolve problems and adhere to health and safety guidelines
