The purpose of the job

Incumbent is a member of the multidisciplinary team, who reports to the Campus Manager. The Relief Childcare worker will assist with the developmental, coaching and educational needs of the youth. The incumbent stands as the role model for the child assisting with the physical, psychological and the social needs of the child. This position will be required to relief the housemothers in 3 different House Units caring for children between the ages of 4 and 18 years.

Responsibilities

Assisting/sharing responsibility with the relevant child care worker (housemother)
Responsible for the effective management of the house unit
Planning, organizing and control of all aspects pertaining to the household
Providing a warm, safe and emotionally supportive environment for the youth
Be able to deal and handle children with difficult and challenging behaviour
Maintain the handover book and keep the team up to date with the youth’s development progress
Promotes good behaviour, support and encourage youth to reach their full potential
Takes responsibility for the supplement and safe keeping of the first aid box and prescribed medication
Encourages the youth to take part in school sport activities, cultural activities as well as developmental activities.
Reports general scholastic problems to the social worker
Maintain good relationships with volunteers and handle community involvement

Competencies

At least two tears experience working in children’s home
Be able to understand how to deal with traumatised children
To have the ability to work with 10 children at any given time
Strong discipline skills
Teamwork very important
Administrative and communication skills
Be able to work under pressure, and have high levels of emotional intelligence
Must be willing to provide 24-hour care to children. (Sleep-in required when on duty)

Minimum Requirements

Senior Certificate a must have
Experience in Child and Youth Care work highly advantages
Be able to read, write and speak English
