PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To safely shunt rail wagons and safely perform rail inspections.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT, RISK, QUALITY AND COMMUNITY
• Participate and comply with SHEQ requirements (SHEQ Toolbox)
• Shunting:
• Correct number of wagons coupled
• All brake pipes coupled
• No objects on or near tracks which can cause derailment / damage
• Level crossings – state of road traffic and ensure safe operation
• Adhere to all related SOP’s, PTO’s and CTO’s as per Training Matrix per position, SHEQ and company standards
• Ensure the OHASA safety, health and environmental standards are maintained
• Ensure conformance with Quality and Environmental standards
• Comply to the 5S requirements and manage your area of responsibility
CUSTOMERS
• Ensure Customer Satisfaction
BUSINESS PROCESSES
• Shunting (also into restricted areas) of rail wagons correctly, safely and according to standards
• Basic administrative functions and two-way radio communication
• Maintaining shunt and other responsibilities strictly in conformance with SHEQ, Legislative and Rail Services standards
• Coupling and uncoupling of wagons
• Protect level crossings
• Act as Loco Driver when required and if competent
• Direct locomotive movements
• Conduct regular shunter inspections and report deviations
• Communicate with TFR when the Loco Driver is not available
• Inspection of rail wagons
• Safely perform rail inspections
• Work shifts on a rotational basis
• Work overtime as and when required
• Be prepared to work in a hot or cold and dusty environment
• Any other related tasks
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
• External Candidates: Grade 12 or N3
• Internal Candidates only: Grade 12 or N3 or N3 that is equivalent to a Grade 12/ Matric (4x Technical subjects or 4x Business subjects and 2x Language subjects)
• Valid Shunter certificate of competence
• Physically fit
• Good coordination skills (hand, eye & foot)
ADVANTAGEOUS
• Maths & Science on Grade 12/N3 Level
• 2 years’ Shunting experience
• Have good perception and observation skills
• Be able to concentrate for long hours
• Knowledge and understanding of air brakes
• Valid driver’s license (minimum B/ Code 08)
